THE CYLINDER
In
her
meditation
on
the
Cylinder,
Pegado
revisits
old
themes
in
eight
paintings
of
mature
beauty.
The
association
with
the
traditional
symbolism
of
the
Cylinder,
as
we
may
recall,
is
replaced by the new meaning she conveys in her work.
As
the
original
shaft
of
divine
light
that
condenses
the
conflicts
of
obscure
clans,
the
Cylinder
retains,
in
her
own
reading,
the
authority
of
its
old
functions
and
history,
but
is
invested
now
in
the
act
of
celebrating
the
triumph
of
the
pair.
The
tangled
shapes
of
Oriental-looking
garlands
and
festoons,
which
seem
to
capture
the
taste
and
flavour
of
an
exotic and alien culture, convey the joy of celebrating a new power.
