THE PLURAL
Lilia
devised
a
system
in
her
own
technique
of
painting
which
can
be
used
by
children
as
a
means of self-discovery, and discovery of the world, through painting.
By
teaching
the
principles
of
The
Quadrangle,
the
children
are
encouraged
to
play
with
images
and
words,
and
to
distinguish
their
meaning
and
associations.
This
practice
has
helped
not
only
their
sense
of
self-discovery
but
also
their
ability
to
focus,
communicate,
function
as
a
team,
become
socially
adept,
develop
self-confidence
and
self-esteem
and
importantly, have fun.
Through
pictorial
representation
Pegado
helps
them
create
their
own
experiences
by
providing them with the means of self-expression.
The
Variations
On
The
Theme
Of
The
Quadrangle
is
principally
a
meditative
process,
which,
like
meditation,
produces
a
concrete
result
in
the
brain.
Unlike
meditation,
however,
it
also
produces results on paper as a pictorial image of the experience itself.
One
sits
in
an
upright
but
comfortable
position
in
front
of
paper
and
pencil
and
begins
a
meditative period of five minutes in complete silence, focusing on the breathing.
At
this
point
one
starts
drawing
the
first
small
square
in
the
middle
of
the
paper.
This
first
square
is
followed
by
another
and
so
on
tracing
a
line
which
flows
and
guides
the
hand
in
an
involuntary
but
disciplined
motion
that
is
the
manifestation
and
expression
of
an
internal
state of being at that very moment.
“The
Plural
is
a
art
Project
about
us
children
in
year
6
working
together
as
one,
in
peace
and
harmony.
With
different
cultures
and
different
ways
of
painting
and
making
different
and
unique
art.
I
feel
joy
participating
with
this
wonderful
experience
with
art,
culture
and
peace.
Everyone
who
is
joining
in
The
Plural
project
is
happy
working
together
as
on
peaceful
team
making
beautiful
art.
Art
is
always
and
it
should just carry on.”
Jinelle G. (Pupil of St. Mary's R/C School)
“The
Plural
is
a
project
about
peace
and
harmony
and
love.
I
feel
happy
and
feel
like
making
people
happy.
This
would
be
a
dream
come
true.
I
feel very very very happy.”
Ebenernezer O. (Pupil of St. Mary's R/C School)
CHILDREN'S WRITINGS ABOUT THE PLURAL PROJECT
CHILDREN'S WRITINGS ABOUT THE BRAIN
Lilia Pegado tells the children that the most
important thing in her life is the brain. She shows
them a painting she made when she was 12 years
old called 'The Brain'.
Lilia Pegado - The Brain - Age 12
After
the
initial
meditative
silence
the
music
by
J.S.Bach
is
played
throughout
the
remainder
of
the
session.
Lilia
Pegado
finds
that
his
music
contains
elements,
which
helps
to
induce
a
state
of
serenity
in
the
mind.
A
session
lasts
for
three-quarters
of
an
hour.
In
order
to
achieve
beneficial
and
long-lasting
results
this
practice
has
to
be
applied
once
or
twice
a
week.
The Plural is a project by Lilia Pegado of ethical education through art, which has also a
soothing psychological effect on children, who are committed to active teamwork.
Pegado’s art covers a wide variety of themes ranging from the preservation of Nature and
the harmony of society, to solidarity and love. She brings cohesion to her work through a
geometric symbolism, based on her practice, The Variations On The Theme Of The
Quadrangle.
“The
brain
is
the
center
of
your
soul.
Without
it
we
are
useless.
Without
it
we
have
no
life.
Without
it
we
can
not
walk
or
even
talk.
The
world
would be without form. ”
Leslie A. (Pupil of St. Mary's R/C School)
“The brain is a wonderful thing from a world out of this planet.
It's like a giant cookie. It's like a ball of gum. It's like a football in a net.
The
brain
is
everything
you
are
it
keeps
you
alive.
It's
like
a
car
going
down
hill.
You
imagine
things
with
your
brain.
The
brain
guides
us
to
heaven.
Without
the
brain
you
can't
do
sums
without
your
wonderful
brain”
Leon D. (Pupil of St. Mary's R/C School)
